Liberate Your Art Postcard Swap 2015

I don't remember how I found out about the LYA Swap, but it was probably from one of the many mail art blogs that I started following after seeing the documentary Making Mail.

I immediately knew I wanted to participate in the swap, but there were a few obstacles to overcome. First and foremost the "courage" part. I'm way too shy to participate in anyhing at all. For me, life is definitely a spectator sport. And then it was the "art" part. I'm not an artist. I've never made anything even remotely resembling art.

So how could I participate in a huge art swap, with lots of people from all over the world?

By just doing it, of course.

I'd made one postcard for a fellow postcrosser before I joined this swap. Now I had to make five. And not just handmade postcards, but postcards that could be considered art.

It didn't go so well.

I was ridiculously busy in February and didn't have time for this, but I still managed to create five cards that I felt were good enough. At the last minute I printed them, wrote them ...

And just when I was about to mail them, I realised that the three cards that were printed on glossy paper weren't made to be written on. My carefully printed messages came off on my hands when I picked them up, to stuff them in the envelope for Kat.

So I only had two cards.

I seriously considered quitting the swap several times, but this one setback was the hardest to push through. It honestly felt like the universe was trying to tell me something. (Something like "Listen to me: You are not an artist!!!") But I guess I'm not a very good listener. I wrote new messages on three more of the matt paper cards and ran to the mail box before I lost my nerve. Again.

I don't know if my cards ever arrived anywhere, or what the recipients thought of them, but I sent them. It's a ridiculously small step for mankind, I realise that, but for me this was huge. Enormous.

And in return for overcoming all my doubts and fears I got these (if you click on the images, you can see them better!):

Amazing pieces of art that have brightened up the last few weeks and brought masses of inspiration! I've tried to find a Malmö background that matched each of the cards, but I'm afraid my photography skills didn't really do the postcards justice. Believe me, the cards are great!

I never thought I'd do something like this, but now I'm certainly doing it again. There are so many techniques that I'm dying to try and I'd like to experiment more with combinations of my writing and my  images. The swap video was full of inspiration and I've already started thinking about next year's cards ... :-)

  1. You received some lovely postcards. Keep at it. The first year I did all mixed media. The last two years, I've taken photographs. I think I'm going to do a mixed media for next year ... already thinking about 2016!

    1. Yes, it's quite addictive, isn't it! :-) I've never tried mixed media, but would love to experiment with different materials. I'm going to try a little bit of everything I can think of, and hopefully I'll feel more confident next year. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

    1. That was a good idea! I thought I might try to make a couple of cards a month, using different techniques. If I start right away, I won't have that deadline on my shoulder all the time. :-)
